Commander Eligio Lara began his career in law enforcement over 30 years ago. He worked for the Lindsay Police Department, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lompoc Police Department, and in August 2002, he lateraled to the Santa Maria Police Department. Commander Lara has held the ranks of Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Division Commander.
Throughout his tenure, he has worked a variety of assignments, including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Beat Coordinator, Violent Crimes Detective, Narcotics Detective, Gang Suppression Team, Field Sergeant, Community Services Sergeant, Watch Commander, Dispatch Lieutenant, and currently serves as the Support Division Commander.
Throughout Commander Lara’s career, he has worked and continues to work in conjunction with non-profit organizations, local school districts, and community outreach groups. He holds a master’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in sociology and leadership.
