Preparation

A career as a line-level patrol officer, is not for the faint of heart – or weak of muscle. Without even considering the elements of engaging in physical contact, or chasing a fleeing suspect on foot, the position requires you to work long hours with several pounds of gear packed around your body daily, twist and maneuver in and out of a patrol vehicle multiple times per shift, as well as sit for extended periods to type. Your physical fitness is of critical importance – for your safety, and the safety of those you wish to protect.

Practice

A sensible physical fitness and wellness plan is a core fundamental aspect of the practice you will need to adhere to, at a minimum. The test has specific elements which will require you to have the ability to both sprint and run longer distances, as well as other practical exercises to test your strength and agility. An awareness of the key components of the exam, and steps you could potentially take to improve your chances of success, can be found through general internet searches. Familiarize yourself via online videos, and find applicable ways to incorporate these elements into your workouts. Many applicants have found success through H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) programs, Crossfit workouts, or obstacle course training gyms.

Examination

On test day, you should arrive dressed appropriately for a workout, as you will need to complete the specific set of exercises given in the time allotted. The particulars include: A short obstacle course, a 165-pound dummy drag over 50 feet, scale a six-foot chain link fence, all within two minutes. The physical agility test also requires you to run ¼ of a mile in under three minutes. Do not assume that just because you exercise regularly, you will be assured satisfactory completion! Those who come well-practiced and prepared have a significantly more positive outcome.
